Kenmore Clothes Dryer starts but only if I open the door and spin it a little

August 25, 2009 · Leave a Comment

My Kenmore Electric Clothes Dryer works but only if I open the door, hold down the door switch, reach up and push the start switch and then spin the chamber/tub by hand and quickly close the door.

If I try and use the normal method it will just hum. Sometimes after using the dryer for consecutive loads it WILL start on its own in the normal manner.

I’ve opened it up and cleaned and vacuumed all the lint, etc from around the motor. The belt looks ok. The dryer performs fine otherwise.

What could be wrong?

Answer:

The fact that you need to give it a little “boost” in order to get it going might mean that your Kenmore’s Electric Clothes Dryer motor is going bad and will need to be replaced.

Before running out and replacing your motor, be sure to check the supporting dryer drum elements to make sure these are good and are not keeping the dryer drum from spinning. Check the drum slides and drum glides or wheels to make sure they are not seizing and holding the motor back from starting properly.

Gibson Refrigerator is warm and the freezer works fine

August 7, 2009 · Leave a Comment

My problem is my refrigerator is warm and the freezer works fine. What can be the problem? The fridge brand is: Gibson model GRT18C6AWA.  There was frost in the back of the freezer, and there was also a build-up of ice in the hold between the refrigerator and the freezer, it was block. I unplugged the refrigerator last night end then connected it back this morning all is ok now. If the problem comes back, what could be the problem?

Answer: The problem might lie with self-defrost system and it’s possible that the timer has gone bad and it’s not advancing your freezer into the defrost cycle. Using one of the diagrams for Gibson Refrigerator’s here, locate the defrost timer (places to check:  front grill of the refrigerator, in the refrigerator/freezer in the temperature control consul, or behind the refrigerator near the compressor.)

Check the defrost timer manually advancing it to the defrost cycle using a screw driver.  Advance it to the defrost cycle by turning advance screw until you hear a click. It is now in defrost mode. Check back in 30 minutes to see if it has left defrost mode and resumed cooling. If it has, then it’s probably the timer and will need to be replaced along with the defrost thermostat.

There might also be something wrong with the defrost heater. Test the heater by joining the 2 wires together to bypass the defrost thermostat. If the heater comes on, after doing this, then it’s definitely the timer, if not, replace the heater.

Replacing your clothes dryer belt

August 6, 2009 · 1 Comment

Question: I’m trying to replace the belt on my electric dryer. I am unsure of which way to thread it on the pulley/tensioner system. The piece that comes from the center of the motor is directly under the bigger piece attached to the spring which I believe is the tensioner.

The tensioner is on an inverted V shaped piece of metal with the spring on the left as viewed from the back of the dryer through the access place.

I don’t want to guess wrong as it looks like it could go either way, but I’m sure it must have a proper direction to go.

Answer: Here’s a handy diagram that shows different clothes dryer drum and belt configurations. Choose the one that looks right for your clothes dryer. General Electric Clothes Dryer, Model number DHDSR46EE1WW, won’t start the drying cycle, just hums and doesn’t turn or blow heat

August 5, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Question: My General Electric Clothes Dryer, Model number DHDSR46EE1WW, won’t start the drying cycle. I know it has power, yet when I turn the start dial it just hums and doesn’t turn or blow heat. What’s wrong?

Answer: From what you have described the problems sounds like the clothes dryer’s motor is seized.

Normally, you can hear the motor running, but if you don’t hear the motor, and you hear a buzzing sound instead, the motor may be seized and you’ll probably need to replace the motor or motor start capacitor. Remove the clothes dryer’s belt, then check for any blockages in the dryer’s blower fan housing and try to turn the shaft on the motor by hand.

If it’s too hard or impossible to turn the clothes dryer’s motor shaft, and the dryer’s blower fan housing has no obstructions; odds are that you need to replace the clothes dryer motor.

Instructions on how to take apart you General Electric Clothes Dryer in order to make any repairs.

Ice is forming on the coils and air filter of my Energy Star Dehumidifier

July 28, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Question: Ice is forming on the coils and air filter of my Energy Star Dehumidifier, Model number 580.53509300, and little to no water is being collected in the bucket, even though it’s summer and the temperature in the basement is 75F degrees. What’s wrong?

Answer: Sounds like the anti frost sensor has failed or there is something wrong with the anti frost cycle or heater.  The anti frost sensor detects when the temperature has dropped below 65° F (although some types of dehumidifiers can operate at temps as low as 44° and 38 F) and turns off the compressor to keep the coils from freezing up.

Try turning off your dehumidifier for 20 minutes and let the coils manual defrost. Some models have filters that protect the coils from dirt and dust. Make sure these filters (is washable) are cleaned and replaced regularly. Check the coils to make sure they are clean and ice-free before you turn it back on again.

If it ices back up then there is probably something wrong with the heater, sensor, or defrost cycle.

Maytag Washer is leaving lint and fluff on laundry

July 27, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Too much lint and fluff in washing loads.

I have a Maytag  Heavy Duty/ 3 Speed Select Washing Machine, Model number PAV3200AAW and it does not matter what I wash , which cycle I use, or what water level I use, there is always lint or fluff left all over my clothing.

In a normal washer there is a fluff/lint filter or some other way to catch it. In this one it was supposed to float it all to the top and then purge it out during the rinse cycle. I am sure that there really is something wrong with this washer, as you shouldn’t have to manually remove all of the fluff and lint from your washing after it has been washed.

Is there something wrong with this or am I doing something wrong?

Answer: For this type of Maytag Washer, check the center tube of the agitator where the lint tends to collect (esp. for Maytag washers), you need to lift out that tube and clean it periodically.

If you are having problems with lint and fluff build up on your newly-washed items:

  • Make sure you are not over filling your washer so clothing and other laundry articles can move about freely.
  • Check the care instructions for your clothing articles and follow as directed.
  • Wash like items with like. In other words, wash your delicate items together, and items that can take more wear and tear together.
  • Wash synthetic fiber garments (rayon, nylon, polyester, acrylic, spandex, acetate) separately and inside out for a shorter time. If you are unsure how to care for these items, here’s a good laundry guide for synthetic fabrics.
  • Sort loads properly and use enough water in the cycles to rinse well.

Maytag Refrigerator not cold, freezer works fine

July 8, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Question: My three-year-old Maytag Refrigerator, model number MFF2557HEW, is not as cold as it should be. The Maytag Freezer works just fine and is cold enough. What could be wrong?

Answer: Cold air for your Maytag refrigerator is really made in the freezer portion of your refrigerator/freezer. In order for the cold air made in your freezer to get to your refrigerator, your air damper needs to be open and functional. If the air camper is closed, blocked by freezer items or damaged in some way, cold air cannot make its way into your refrigerator and the temperature will rise.

A fan also draws air from the bottom of the cooling/evaporator coils and blows some cold air back into the freezer and up into the fresh food section of your refrigerator through an air damper.

Check your refrigerator’s cooling/evaporator coils for frost or ice buildup which might restrict the air flow into your refrigerator.

Kenmore gas dryer won’t stay running if start button is not constantly pressed

July 7, 2009 · Leave a Comment

My Kenmore gas dryer, Model Number: 11073932101,   about 1 – 5 years old, will only run if I hold down the start button. My gas dryer quits as soon as the starts button is released. Any ideas?

Answer: According to the model number, this is a Kenmore Gas Dryer with Even Heat Control. The Even Heat Control Board is located in the clothes dryer’s consol. An appliance service personnel will perform several tests to see if it is the Even Heat control board is sending the required pulse sequences to the timer motor. You can read about the tests on this page and perform them yourself when diagnosing this problem. This page goes into detail including what settings you should have your multimeter on when testing.

Other parts that could be bad besides the Even Heat control board include the thermostat, thermal fuse, thermistor, and timer.

Kenmore Refrigerator Icemaker is not getting water

July 1, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Question: Hi, I have a Kenmore Refrigerator with icemaker. I recently had my water hooked up to the city’s water supply and the supply line got clogged in the process. The water is now getting to the refrigerator, but it is not getting to icemaker. I can’t find a filter to check if it’s clogged. How can I manually activate the solenoid to check for blockage?  How do I check the electrical signal to solenoid?

Answer: if your icemaker won’t fill with water, here are a few things to check first, check the fill spout tube for blockages; this is the tube that sends water into the freezer section and the ice maker.

If you discover a problem, it’s best to replace the fill valve.
